Background
The University of Pavia (UNIPV) is one of the world’s oldest academic institutions: it was founded in 1361 and until the 20th century it was the only University in the Milan Area and the region of Lombardy. Today it is a comprehensive university, which covers all subject areas - Science and Technology, Science Engineering, Life Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences - and is composed of 18 Departments offering study programmes at all levels, from Bachelor’s degrees to Doctorate programmes. The academic staff counts more than 900 professors and researchers. 21,000 students, from both Italy and overseas, study at the University of Pavia. The University of Pavia participates in more than 400 international agreements with universities all over the world, and especially it collaborates in research projects with the most advanced international laboratories and organizes Masters and PhD research programs. The University is an active promoter of research in collaboration with the world’s most prestigious academic institutions; it has created 7 research centres based in Pavia and 21 in different sites in collaboration with other institutions, in addition to 42 interdepartmental research centres that carry out ongoing and interdisciplinary basic and applied research. UNIPV has a strong experience in the field of development cooperation, having established in 1987 the Centre for International Cooperation and Development (CICOPS), with the aim of promoting cooperation with developing countries and stimulating relations between the University of Pavia and universities in developing countries. UNIPV is also an active member of several networks, among them: Coimbra Group of Universities, EUA, UNIMED, CUIA, Scholars at Risk. Pavia has been a city-campus since its foundation and even today it offers students a unique experience in Italy and rare in Europe: to study at one of 20 University colleges that are largely independent from the administrative structure of the University. Since the beginning of the Erasmus programme, UNIPV has been always very active. In recent years, UNIPV took part in several Erasmus+ projects, both as coordinator and as partner. In particular, it took part in Strategic Partnerships projects in the field of higher education, school, VET and adult. In 2020, a Centre for Global Strategic Engagement (GLOBEC) has been established with the objective of supporting the international initiatives, among them the support to all the project phases (identification, design, management, dissemination). In 2020, UNIPV has been selected in the second call of European Universities initiative with the project “European Campus of City-Universities-EC2U”. In this project will be involved the LabTalento is the Laboratory was founded on 22nd January 2009 with the aim of helping young people with high cognitive skills or skills and a specific ability to fully develop their potential. To raise awareness in educational and political contexts to recognize and invest in the topic with the intent to carry out research and intervention in the field of exploitation the potential, talent and intellectual giftedness. Target children, families, teachers as a valid indispensable support and point of reference during development. The staff of LabTalento is composed six persons, three people are involved in the assessment of children and young people and other people are involved in teacher training and in both individual and group support of children with inclusive school projects. The Lab offers a certification of children's cognitive potential, considering not only the cognitive aspects (IQ), but also the socio-emotional ones, investigating the strengths and critical points that affect the development of the child at an individual level, family and extra- family.
Experience
The LabTalento over the years has developed an educational program STIMA curricular interventions designed to promote science education with a focus on girls. The STIMA project represents the Italian declination, by LabTalento of Pavia, of the STEAM approach. The acronym is declined in two directions and alongside the technical-disciplinary aspects a specific attention to the socio-emotional aspects. In this sense - in addition to Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Art - 5 new keywords are added: Safety, Talent, Emotional Intelligence, Motivation, Self-esteem. STEAM disciplinary fields are often topics of interest and excellence for high potential students, who in perceiving themselves recognized in their peculiarities tend to show greater affection for the school environment. The choice to combine cognitive aspects with emotional-motivational aspects is in line with the mission of LabTalento, to also support the critical issues and well-being of the student and not just cognitive learning. The STIMA project was promoted in schools starting from the 2016/2017 school year and is concretely implemented in the STIMA Laboratories usually offered at the University of Pavia. The STIMA project uses interactive methodologies based on problem solving, team building, self-regulated learning through favoring peer to peer methods and thus also favoring the development of soft skills. Furthermore, since 2017, on the occasion of the ministerial announcement 'In summer you learn STEM' (promoted by the Ministry of Equal Opportunities), LabTalento has launched a specific project on the female STEM front entitled 'KALEIDOSCOPRO: THE CHARM OF STEM', involving female students and students of primary school (Junior course), of lower secondary school (Senior course) and of second degree (involved as Tutor), for a series of meetings organized in collaboration with secondary schools and university laboratories. 'KALEIDOSCOPRO: the charm of STEM” between experiments, stories and testimonies '. A project, realized with the contribution of the Department for Peers Opportunities, with the aim of promoting and disseminating STEM disciplines (Science,Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), through activities based on teaching methodologies innovative and participatory that foster knowledge and study, in an inclusive perspective and with particular attention to the role of women in scientific fields. Recently research in the field of gender differences has focused on so-called STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) where the gap between males and females it appears to be particularly significant. Statistical data collected by MIUR reveal a low female presence in the school and university population of technical-scientific paths. This gap is also present in the working world, where the 'Pink quotas' engaged in technicalscientific careers are even less representative. The project will involve both the expert psychologists and pedagogists of LabTalento who have methodological and didactic skills in learning together with trained teachers who will introduce these interactive methodologies based on problem solving and peer to peer supported by experts in scientific disciplines, university researchers and professionals.
